Santiago Dominican Republic Airport: Cibao (STI)

Dec 22, 2023

The Cibao International Airport, also known as Santiago Dominican Republic Airport, is situated in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, which is the second largest city in the Dominican Republic. The Cibao International Airport is the third busiest airport in the Dominican Republic in terms of passenger traffic, following Las Américas International Airport and Punta Cana International Airport.

Overview of Santiago airport information

Santiago City’s center is 15 kilometers (9.3 mi) northwest of the Santiago Dominican Republic Airport. It is currently the third most crowded airport in the Dominican Republic, after Punta Cana and Santo Domingo airports. Facilitating many departures, the airport handled over 1,900,000 passengers.

The infrastructure of Cibao International Airport includes a primary international terminal which operates the majority of flights from Cibao, a domestic terminal, and a cargo terminal. Located at the busy Cibao International Airport, the primary international terminal handles the majority of flights on schedule, along with offering modern facilities for a smooth check-in, boarding, and baggage claim procedures.

Terminal for international flights

The international section of Cibao International Airport’s main terminal, a departure point for many flights, consists of six gates (B1-B6), with five equipped with boarding docks (B1-B2/B4-B6). Providing a direct route to modern airport amenities, it is located between the domestic and cargo terminals.

Currently, the new expansion of the airport is being built. The new infrastructure will accommodate more departure gates and baggage handling spaces. Recently equipped with boarding docks and designed to streamline departures, Gates B1 and B2 at Cibao International Airport have been upgraded, leaving Gate B3 for smaller aircraft. JetBlue Airways, which operates numerous flights from Cibao, is currently the airport’s largest airline.

Terminal for domestic flights

Located adjacent to the international terminal which operates many departures, the domestic terminal, also known as the General Aviation hall, at Cibao International Airport has three stands (A1 to A3). Originally catering to domestic flights from Cibao, it is now used exclusively for private charter flights. Aerolineas Mas was the primary domestic airline operating at this airport, offering flights to Santo Domingo-JBQ and Port-au-Prince.

With plans to expand its route to Punta Cana, Aerolineas Mas had established Cibao International Airport as its focus city. Air Century ceased regular domestic flights in Santiago. As a result, domestic flights are no longer available at this airport, with the international air terminal being the sole terminal in operation.

Air Force Base

In the past, Santiago airport functioned as an air base for the Dominican Air Force as a support facility.  Nowadays there aren’t military planes based at this airport.
